DIC Lanka launched two major initiatives – enhancing the firefighting system and increasing lux levels in operational areas to support employee safety, optimize energy usage, and contribute to the company’s long-term sustainability goals.

Strengthening the Firefighting System for a Safer Workplace

Fire safety is a crucial element of workplace risk management, and enhancing DIC Lanka’s firefighting system aims to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of fire suppression mechanisms. The improvements are focused on minimizing potential fire-related hazards that could impact employee safety, company assets, and overall business continuity. Strengthening emergency response capacity through employee training and infrastructure development has been a key priority.

To achieve these objectives, DIC Lanka has implemented several strategic upgrades:

  • Increased fire hydrant pressure to ensure adequate water flow during emergencies.
  • Installed extended hydrant outlets in critical areas to improve coverage and accessibility.
  • Fire monitors were added to prepare and better manage larger fires.
  • A hydrant indication system was introduced to track water levels and pressure in real time, allowing for immediate action in case of abnormalities.

Alongside infrastructure improvements, employee training has been a major focus. Staff participated in regular fire drills and were trained in extinguisher use, evacuation protocols, and first-response procedures. A dedicated emergency response team was also established to ensure coverage across all shifts.

These efforts have resulted in several positive outcomes, including increased fire safety through faster response times and improved fire control, enhanced emergency readiness among employees, and greater alignment with international workplace safety standards such as ISO 45001. Additionally, by strengthening its firefighting system, DIC Lanka has minimized the risk of production downtime and property damage, ensuring greater business continuity.

Increasing Lux Levels in Operational Areas for Safety and Sustainability

In addition to fire safety enhancements, DIC Lanka focused on improving lighting conditions in operational areas to enhance workplace safety, employee well-being, and energy efficiency. Proper lighting plays a critical role in preventing workplace accidents, boosting employee morale, and reducing reliance on artificial lighting, which ultimately contributes to cost savings and sustainability efforts.

To achieve these objectives, the company has implemented a sustainable lighting improvement strategy centered around maximizing natural daylight. Beyond energy efficiency, improved lighting conditions have had a positive impact on workplace safety and productivity.

  • Better illumination has reduced the risk of accidents caused by poor visibility, particularly in production and operational areas. Employees now work in a brighter, more comfortable environment, leading to improved focus, efficiency, and job satisfaction.
  • Reducing electricity consumption, the company has decreased its carbon footprint by 2.3 metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year, supporting DIC Lanka’s broader environmental sustainability goals.

Contribution to Sustainable Corporate Goals

Both of these initiatives align with DIC Lanka’s corporate commitment to sustainability, safety, and responsible business practices. The energy savings from improved lighting contribute directly to the company’s carbon footprint reduction targets, while enhanced fire safety measures minimize the risk of hazardous emissions resulting from fire incidents.

These efforts also align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being) by providing a safer and healthier workplace, SDG 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy) by reducing energy consumption, SDG 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth) through improved working conditions and productivity, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by upgrading safety and efficiency measures, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by lowering CO₂ emissions through energy conservation initiatives.

Conclusion

From a business continuity perspective, these projects have significantly strengthened DIC Lanka’s risk management framework. Enhanced fire protection measures safeguard employees, equipment, and production continuity, while improved lighting has led to greater operational efficiency, reduced accident rates, and better overall performance. These proactive efforts also reinforce DIC Lanka’s reputation as a responsible corporate entity that prioritizes sustainability, safety, and operational excellence.
