As the world increasingly grapples with the issue of plastic pollution, countries are launching initiatives aimed at addressing this critical challenge. Vietnam has taken a proactive stance by launching the “Plastics Circularity Innovation Challenge 2024”.

About the Program: Plastics Circularity Innovation Challenge 2024

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in collaboration with key industry players such as Unilever Vietnam, BritCham British Business Association, and the Vietnam Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Fund (SVF), focuses on finding innovative solutions to improve plastic waste recycling technology. This program is designed to encourage individuals and organizations across the country to develop innovative solutions that support the plastic circular economy. You can find out more information here.

With participation from over 1,000 individuals and organizations submitting close to 100 proposals, it is part of a broader national initiative aimed at enhancing plastic waste management efficiency while increasing public understanding of the issue.

DIC Vietnam (DICVN), along with three partners—Fuji Seal Group (VN), Duytan Recycling, and Botol Vietnam—presented a breakthrough solution titled “A Comprehensive Solution for PET Bottle Recycling System in Vietnam.” This solution earned the top prize of the competition. The proposed solution focuses on a collaborative approach that addresses the entire recycling value chain, from production to post-recycling.

This collaboration leverages each collaborator’s unique expertise:

  • DIC Group’s washable ink allows ink to be removed from labels during the recycling process without contaminating the washing solution, reducing resource consumption and waste.
  • Fuji Seal’s washable labels made from cPET shrink films can be recycled along with the PET bottles, avoiding the traditional label separation process.
  • Botol Group implemented smart technology for sorting plastic at the source, ensuring recyclable materials are properly identified and processed.
  • Duytan Recycling operates one of the most modern recycling facilities in Vietnam, capable of processing over 100,000 tonnes of PET annually.

The closed-loop process not only meets food safety standards but also supports the broader sustainability goals of the circular economy.

What This Achievement Means for DIC Vietnam:

Team Obtains Top Prize for Breakthrough Solutions

This award unlocks further opportunities for DICVN and its partners to expand the project to other consumer packaging materials such as PE, PP, PS, and beyond. The project will be supported by key partners, including Unilever Vietnam, Standard Chartered Ventures, and the National EPR Council Office – which will help the team refine, scale up, and bring their innovative solutions to the market.
