The Future of Sustainable Packaging Webinar: Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions from the Session by Topic

Topic 1: Sustainable Ink & Packaging Solutions

Q: Can your de-inking solution be used for metallized paper for beer labels?

A: For glass beer bottles with an adhesive label the standard recycling approach is to remove the label in a hot sodium hydroxide bath. In this situation you would want the ink to stay on the label and so you would use an ink retentive substrate with appropriate inks.

Q: How can we make solvent-based inks sustainable?

A: For every ink category that DIC Group sells there is the possibility of making more sustainable options. For solvent-based inks, a good starting point would be to use solvents that are predominantly bio-based, or that have a mass-balance allocated product carbon footprint reduction. In addition to sustainable solvent options, the resin and additive choice can be reviewed.

When printing solvent-based inks, options such as solvent recovery and reuse, or solvent incineration with energy recovery should be explored.

Q: In light of Sustainable Packaging, is there any magnetizable coatings?

A: DIC Group can supply inks containing magnetizable pigments. Due to the higher film thickness of ink required to achieve this property the normal application techniques are gravure or screen printing.

Topic 2: Product Life Cycle Assessment

Q: What tools are being used currently for Product life cycle assessment in-house?

A: Given the huge number of products supplied by DIC Group it makes sense that DIC has developed in-house Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool. One of the main tools DIC uses for LCA is Sphera LCA for Experts. To use this tool effectively, the data source is also an equally important factor. DIC uses a combination of industry databases and primary data coming from suppliers. DIC is working hard to increase the amount primary data coming from suppliers as this overall gives the most reliable PCF answer.

Topic 3: Region-Specific Questions

Q: What are the solutions for EU’s digital passport initiative?

A: The European Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will require products put onto the market to have QR codes that link to the sustainability credentials of the product in a digital passport. To support this for printed packaging, it is likely that all of the packaging material suppliers will need to provide sustainability related data for the products used. DIC is in a good position to do this given the internal capabilities for Life Cycle Assessment and regulatory compliance disclosure.

Q: How strong is DIC moving on sustainable innovation in the market?

A: Cost competitiveness remains a key priority for the market. As the market shifts towards sustainability, timely innovation is crucial to allow converters to offer brand owners sustainable products without losing its competitiveness. DIC believes that enhancing collaboration with stakeholders is vital for driving innovation in sustainability.

Q: Can DIC provide Halal Compliance for DFC coatings and inks?

A: For many sites, DIC Group can certify that the products supplied do not contain substances of animal origin. For some sites, like PT DIC Graphics Indonesia, DIC can provide Halal certification. With the growing importance of Halal certification, we will revisit the business case for sites to obtain direct Halal certification.

Q: Recycling infrastructure is well developed in EU but not in Asia. Would there be any benefits to move to recyclable structures before recycling infrastructure is established (referring to mono-web structures).

A: There is a benefit for moving to sustainable packaging structures in order to supply the European and US markets. In some cases, the costs for these sustainable packaging structures are close to cost neutral. The companies that make these moves, or at least have more sustainable packaging structures in their portfolio or products will then be in a good position as the sustainability infrastructure in the Asian market evolves.

Topic 4: Product-Related Questions

Q: Do you sell barrier coatings in Vietnam market?

A: DIC does sell barrier coating into the Vietnam market. Please discuss your barrier requirements with your local DIC location.

Q: Can we have more details on dehaze paper for window?

A: Dehaze coating can be used together with translucent paper to provide windows into paper-based packaging without compromising on end-of-life recycling and whilst giving consumers an easy-to-understand sustainability benefit. Please contact your local DIC location so that we can directly discuss the requirement with you and offer you the optimum solution for your needs.

Q: Are there any products for printed electronics?

A: DIC Group does supply products for printed electronics. This is a different area to packaging, however even in this area sustainability, it is important and DIC Group can offer product carbon footprint information to allow customers to understand the environmental impact of the structures that they are creating.

Q: Can we buy barrier coating products from DIC group? Do barrier coatings work the same to PE layer or what is the barrier percentage compared to PE?

A: DIC Group provides barrier coatings. In the webinar DIC discussed both gas barrier and liquid barrier coatings. Given that your question relates to a replacement for PE the assumption is that your interest is for liquid barrier coatings. Please contact your local DIC location so that we can directly discuss the requirement with you and offer you the optimum solution for your needs.

Q: Are you able to quantify by radio carbon dating the bio content of current solvent-based inks?

A: DIC does offer products with bio-based content, and yes, it can quantify the bio-based content via carbon isotope analysis.
